Chatsworth is a suburban area in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, California. Native Americans lived in the region, and some of them left caves with rock art. Beginning in the 18th century, the Spanish explored and inhabited Chatsworth. The area was originally part of a Spanish land grant known as Rancho Ex-Mission San Fernando, which was the biggest such grant in California when it was taken over by the US during the Mexican American War. Then came settlement and growth. There are seven public and eight private schools in Chatsworth. There is a public library and a transit hub, as well as big open-space and smaller recreational parks. The old Chatsworth Reservoir and the Santa Susana Field Laboratory are notable features. The area has one of the lowest population densities in Los Angeles, as well as a relatively high level of wealth.
Summers in this region are hot and dry, with daily high temperatures averaging 90–100 degrees Fahrenheit. Chatsworth has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps, according to the Köppen Climate Classification system. The Iverson Movie Ranch, a 500-acre property near Chatsworth, was the most shot movie ranch in history, with over 2,000 projects using it as a location. The Santa Susana Mountains on the north, Porter Ranch and Northridge on the east, Winnetka, Canoga Park, and West Hills on the south, the Simi Hills, and unincorporated Los Angeles County and Ventura County on the west, and Twin Lakes, a community founded by San Francisco's George Haight in the early 20th century and unincorporated Los Angeles County that includes a 1,600-acre park with equestrian trails, on the north, are all bordering Chatsworth.
The Metrolink Ventura County Line, which runs from Ventura to Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles, serves the Chatsworth Transit Center, a key transportation hub for the town and west valley. The Coast Line, which also handles freight transport by Union Pacific Railroad and was involved in the 2008 Chatsworth train collision close here, sees 10 Amtrak California Pacific Surfliner trains every day.
In 2012, the Los Angeles Metro system's Orange Line was extended to Chatsworth Station, with a dedicated right-of-way across the Valley to the Red Line's North Hollywood Station. Several Los Angeles Metro, Simi Valley, and Santa Clarita bus lines are also accessible from the Chatsworth Transportation Center. It is located between Devonshire and Lassen streets at 10046 Old Depot Plaza Road. Chatsworth, which is only thirty minutes from Durban, features a large green belt surrounding the Umlaas river and dam. The relatively obscure 220-acre Silverglen Nature Reserve on the northern bank of the Umlazi River is located inside this green belt and serves to safeguard grassland, woodland, and riverine flora.
Residents in these neighborhoods were unaware of the presence of the little nature reserve until recently. For years, the natural heritage site was closed to the public, and it was just recently reopened. The Umlaas River is significant to the history of Silverglen Nature Reserve. Durban was fully reliant on the Umbilo River for water at the end of the 1800s, but the influx of Boer War refugees, as well as a couple of years of drought, prompted engineers to investigate the Umlaas River as a backup supply of water. After the Umbilo water system was devastated by a storm, the Umlaas scheme became the city's primary supply of water for over 50 years.
